SlimVID / Shopify product videos
Need help
with SlimVID?
We help Shopify merchants deliver faster product video experiences while preserving video quality, storefront behavior, and merchant control.
01 / Overview
What SlimVID does
SlimVID helps reduce product video file sizes so videos can load faster and use less bandwidth on your storefront.
You can review the optimized result before applying it. After you apply an optimization and the status becomes Applied, the storefront uses the SlimVID-optimized video for playback.
SlimVID's normal optimization flow does not delete or overwrite the existing Shopify-hosted video, so it remains available for Restore.
02 / Getting started
Quick start
- Make sure the SlimVID App Embed is enabled: go to Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds, turn on SlimVID, and click Save.
- Open Dashboard in SlimVID. SlimVID scans your store automatically. Use Scan again if needed.
- Find the product video you want to optimize and click Optimize.
- Wait until the status changes from Optimizing to Ready to apply.
- Click Review & apply to review and preview the optimized video. You can also scan the QR code to preview it on a mobile device.
- If you want a different balance of file size and visual quality, choose More presets.
- When you are satisfied with the result, click Apply this optimization and wait until the status becomes Applied.
- Open the storefront product page and verify that the optimized video loads and plays normally.
03 / Questions & answers
Common questions
01Will SlimVID delete or overwrite my existing Shopify video?
No. SlimVID's normal optimization flow does not delete or overwrite your existing Shopify-hosted video.
After you apply an optimization, the storefront uses the SlimVID-optimized video for playback while the existing Shopify-hosted video remains available for Restore original.
02Which product video does SlimVID optimize?
SlimVID optimizes the first Shopify-hosted video in the product media order.
Images may appear before the video.
YouTube, Vimeo, iframe embeds, and other externally hosted videos are not optimized.
03Why do I need to enable the SlimVID App Embed?
The SlimVID App Embed allows an applied SlimVID-optimized video to be used for storefront playback.
If the App Embed is disabled, SlimVID does not replace the storefront video source and your storefront continues to use Shopify's normal video playback.
04Does clicking Optimize immediately change my storefront video?
No.
Clicking Optimize starts video processing only. Your storefront is not changed while the video is Optimizing or Ready to apply.
The optimized video is used on the storefront only after you review the result, click Apply this optimization, and the status becomes Applied.
05Can I preview the optimized video before applying it?
Yes.
When the status is Ready to apply, click Review & apply to preview the optimized video in your browser.
You can also scan the QR code to review its visual quality on a mobile device before applying it.
Nothing changes on your storefront until you apply the selected result.
06Can I choose a different optimization result?
Yes.
In the review panel, click More presets if you want a different balance between file size and visual quality.
You can review the new result before deciding which version to apply.
07What happens if optimization fails?
If optimization fails before you apply a result, your storefront video is not changed.
If a retry option is available, follow the retry steps shown in SlimVID. If the issue continues, contact support and include the product name, video name, and any error message shown.
08Why isn't my optimized video showing on the storefront?
First, check that the video status is Applied, the SlimVID App Embed is enabled, you are viewing the correct product, and you have refreshed the storefront product page.
If you recently changed the product video or its media order, return to SlimVID and use Scan again.
If the optimized video still does not appear, contact support with the product name, video name, and a screenshot if available.
09What happens if an applied optimized video becomes unavailable?
SlimVID is designed to avoid interrupting storefront video playback.
If an applied optimized video cannot be loaded, SlimVID falls back to Shopify's normal video playback when the existing Shopify-hosted video is still available.
10How do I restore Shopify's previous video playback?
Go to SlimVID -> Dashboard and find the video with the Applied status.
Click Review.
In the review panel, click Restore original in the lower-right corner and confirm the restore action.
After Restore is complete, refresh the storefront product page. SlimVID will stop using the optimized version and the storefront will return to Shopify's normal video playback.
04 / Source videos
Upload a new source video
Use this when you want to use a different source video for the product.
- Open the video's review panel from Dashboard.
- Under Choose another option, select Upload a new source video.
- Click Choose video, select the new video file, and start the upload.
- Keep the upload page open until the upload is complete. Closing, refreshing, or navigating away during the upload may interrupt it.
- After the upload is complete, SlimVID prepares the new source and starts processing it.
- Wait for the new result to become ready, then review and preview it before applying.
- Apply the new result only when you are satisfied with it.
Your storefront video remains unchanged while the new source is being uploaded and processed. The new video is not used on the storefront until you review and apply the result.
